In July 2024, NHSBT issued an Amber alert due to a severe shortage of O negative blood type. This was triggered by the cyber-attack on London hospitals. Since then, blood stocks have remained low. This has also been exacerbated by several bank holidays in quick succession.
Over the past year, England has seen an increased wave of blood donation registrations – including the largest ever increase in registrations from Black heritage communities. If a million people gave blood regularly – the national blood stock would be replenished.
